How To Transfer Your Website From Wix to WordPress
Wix is a popular website builder that lets you create a simple website, fast. However, many Wix users soon realize that their options are limited and adding extra features can become quite expensive.
In this step by step guide, we’ll walk you through the process of transferring from Wix to WordPress. If you’ve outgrown Wix and are looking to gain more control over your site, migrating from Wix to WordPress will allow you to do just that.
The basic Wix to WordPress migration process is as follows:
Sign up for a WordPress web host and domain name
The first thing you’ll need to do is purchase a domain name. There are many registrars that enable you to do this quickly. You might even be able to sign up for a domain with your hosting provider.
When you use Wix, they host your website for you which is also the reason why it’s quite limited. On the other hand, WordPress is a free software, so you’ll need a place to install it. That’s why you need to purchase web hosting and a domain name.
Customize your site’s style and appearance
Next, you should customize the appearance of your website. It’s easy to do that using WordPress themes.
WordPress themes are similar to Wix templates, they control the appearance and display of your WordPress website.
There are thousands of free WordPress themes available for you to use. Some themes are very basic and minimalist, while others will add a lot of new features to your site.
Import your blog posts from Wix via RSS
After installing your WordPress theme, you are ready to import your blog content from Wix. While Wix does not have an export feature, you can migrate your Wix RSS feed. This will prevent you from having to manually copy and paste each blog post.
Create your Wix pages on WordPress
The RSS feed migration process only imports your website’s posts, and not its pages. Unfortunately, there is no way to automate that part of the process. Insted, you’ll need to recreate each page manually in WordPress.
To start this process, open the first page you want to transfer from your Wix website. Copy its content, then navigate to WordPress and go to Pages > Add New.
Paste the copied content on the new page. You will also need to enter its title, adjust its formatting and styling as needed, and re-add any images, links, and other media. After that, you can select Publish to make the page live. Just as with posts, make sure to check out your pages on the front end to ensure that everything looks right.
Add your logo and images to WordPress
The RSS feed migration will copy over your content, but your images are still hosted on the Wix platform.
You have two ways to transfer your images:
The first is downloading every image from your Wix site and saving them to your computer. Then upload them to WordPress via Media -> Add New.
Redirect Wix to your new WordPress website
Your new WordPress site is complete, and you’re ready to let your readers know about your move.
It’s important to not only announce your move to your readers but to setup proper redirection.
You want all visitors of your old site to land on exactly the same page on the new site. This will also let search engines know that your old site has moved to a new location.
